GEORGE W. RENN EXPIRES AFTER OPERATION AT CAMDEN, N.J.
Well Known Citizen Succumbed Last Evening from Heart Attack Which Followed Operation Performed Last Wednesday.
George W. Renn, of 711 East Sunbury Street, one of his city's oldest, best known and most highly respected residents, passed away at 6:30 last evening at the Cooper Hospital, Camden, New Jersey, from heart failure resultant from a severe abdominal operation performed in Wednesday of last week for the relief of a condition that became acute while he, with his estimable wife, were enjoying a visit at the home of their son, Russell B. Renn at Merchantville, N.J.
Mr. and Mrs. Renn journeyed to Merchantville two weeks ago in a hope that a change in climate might bring relief to the former, who in recent weeks had been afflicted with an abdominal ailment. On Monday of last week the ilness became more acute and upon the advice of the attending physician, Mr. Renn was removed to the Cooper Hospital, where specialists were called into consultation and an operation found necessary in a hope of prolonging life. Without the use of any but a local anesthetic, Mr. Renn heroically submitted to the extensive operation and for a time thereafter seemed to rally. The intense heat of the past several days and a weakening of the heart brought a crisis on Sunday and despite the service of specialists and day and night nurses the respected local resident continued to lose strength, the end coming peacefully at 6:30 last evening.
News of the death of Mr. Renn came as a shock to his many friends throughout the community, in which he had veen a familiar figure for a half-century and wherein he was most highly respected. Few knew of his illness, thus making news of his demise wholly unexpected and causing profound sorrow.
George W., son of William S. and Sara (Foulk) Renn was born at Mile Run, this county, August 31st, 1854 and would have reached the seventy-sixth year of life this month. He grew to manhood in his native heath and resided there until his marriage to Miss Mary Tucker on February 19th, 1880 when he came to this city and engaged in a general dry goods and grocery business on Market Street, continuing that enterprise for twelve years when he engaged in a general huckstering business until nine years ago when he accepted the local salesmanship for a nationally known brush manufactory. Already widely known throughout the community, his later years of activity in the brush sales enterprise gave him increased acquaintanceship and won for him many new friends. A man of most kindly disposition, pleasant approach, pleasing and edifying conversationalist, Mr. Renn enjoyed the highest respect of all with whom he came in contact.
From his earliest tesidence here, George Renn had been an active member of the United Bretheren Church, serving in various offices in the church during his younger years but continuing faithful worship with the advancing of years.
With his estimable wife, the golden wedding anniversary of marriage was observed with a family reunion on February 19th of this year. The celebration was the occasion of a happy family reunion although the observance was unostentatious due to the fact that a daughter, Mrs Grace Crim had passed away in September of last year.
